
What Goes Wrong Inside an Ignition Cylinder
The ignition cylinder is a precision mechanical assembly. It contains a series of spring-loaded wafers or pins that align when the correct key is inserted, allowing the cylinder to rotate through its positions — Accessory, On, and Start. Over time, those internal wafers wear thin, break, or shift out of alignment. A worn key can accelerate this process because a key that has lost its original cut depth no longer drives the wafers cleanly. The result is an ignition that feels stiff, requires jiggling, or simply refuses to turn at all.
A second common failure mode is a key that enters the cylinder but won't release when you switch off the vehicle. This is often caused by a worn detent spring, a broken anti-theft lock tab, or — in vehicles with a shift-interlock system — a transmission that isn't fully in Park, triggering a built-in safety hold.
